Información adicionalThe Belgian 20-franc gold coins, minted between 1867 and 1882, are a fascinating testimony to Belgium's history. Leopold II was King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909 and is known for the colonization of the Congo Free State, where he is considered responsible for the cruel exploitation of the natives. This controversial figure in Belgian history is immortalized on the 20-franc coin with his delicately struck portrait during the first two decades of his reign. Like the 20 franc Vreneli and the 8 florin coin, the 20 franc gold coins are among the official coins of the Latin Monetary Union. On the design side, they show the portrait of Leopold II surrounded by the inscriptions "Leopold II", the year of issue and "Roi des Belges". The value side shows the royal coat of arms of Belgium, accompanied by the face value and the inscription "L'union fait la force" wich means „unity makes strength“.
